Kong-Jin Memorial PhD Endowment A Project of Named Scholarships & Endowments

The Jeongseok Kong & Sunmi Jin Memorial PhD Endowment was created to provide endowed support for PhD students enrolled at the School. Support may be in the form of scholarships, dissertation expenses, travel to educational conferences, or other education-related expenditures. Preference will be given to students enrolled at the School who are on F-1 student visas and recipients will be selected by a committee consisting of three faculty members who teach in the PhD program.

Jeong entered our PhD program in the fall of 2012; he had completed his second year of courses and was taking comprehensive exams in summer 2014 when he and his wife Sunmi died in a tragic car accident while traveling in New York to celebrate their first wedding anniversary. In their lives they modeled many strengths, including courage, commitment, balance, and love.

Jeong and Sunmi demonstrated courage in moving to the U.S. to live and study in a new country. Doctoral-level study is challenging for anyone, but they also had to learn a new language, while learning how to navigate a new and different culture. Jeong demonstrated great commitment to his research in cyberbullying among U.S. and Korean youth.

We hope to showcase Jeong and Sunmi's commitment to scholarship with this Fund that will benefit future generations of PhD students, keeping their names and ideas alive in the School forever.
